Truthfulness:
It means to speak the truth, righteousness and to keep promise. Truth is that universal fact that without believing it a person cannot breathe with satisfaction.
In Quran, Allah says about His truthfulness:
وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ اللهِ حَدِيثًات (النساء: 87)
Translation: And who is more truthful in saying than Allah.
Likewise, in Quran, this quality of Prophet has been described in detail that they were truthful. The fountain head of truth is Allah himself. All Prophets got truth from there and spread in this world: A disbeliever in this truth follows lies and evil in all aspects of life and is ruined at the end. In urdu we use word truth with reference to conversation only but in Quran, its meanings cover the truthfulness of action and thought as well. In reality that person is truthful, who proves it with his actions and thought.
i. Significance of truth in light of Quran and hadees:
Islam gives a lot of stress on truth and righteousness as these save him from many sins. A man's action should be according to his belief which should prove his truthfulness. His outer and inner self should be same. As truthful people are called siddiqeen, in Holy Quran and they will be among Prophets on the day of judgment.
Allah says in Quran.
In other verse, it is said:
وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصُّدِقِينَ ) (التوب: 119)
Translation: And be with those, who are true.
هذا يوم ينفعُ الصِّدِقِينَ صِدقُهُمْ (المائده: 119 )
And this is the day, when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.
The Holy Prophet said:
الصدقُ يُنْجِي وَالْكِذَبُ يُهلك
Translation: "Truthfulness serves you and telling lies kills you".
Hazrat safwan bin sulaim said, "we requested:, O Rasullulah can a believer be coward, "He said", yes, "then he was asked" can believer be a miser, he said, "yes' then he was asked, "can a believer be a liar he said, No".
Once a person came to the Prophet and said, "I have four bad habits, first I'm immodest, second, I steal, third, I drink alcohal and fourth that I tell lies. I would leave one bad habit, which you command me to give up. He said, "Do not tell lies. On second day that person came to him and said that due to not telling lies, all my bad habits are given up. On hearing this, the Holy Prophet became happy.
ii. Kinds of Truthfulness:
Truthfulness of heart
Truthfulness of tongue
Truthfulness of action
Truthfulness of heart: By truthfulness of heart, it means that there shouldn't be any hypocrisy and cheating in heart and sincere determination should be the truth of heart.
Truthfulness of Tongue: Truth should be spoken from your tongue and not a single word should be against truth. This is common and famous kind of truth and it's binding on every Muslim. Fulfilling promise is also included in it and this is the major sign of faith and Islam.
Truthfulness of Action: It means that saying and action of a person should be same. There should not be contradiction in saying and action and there should be uniformity. Such person has been called 'sadiq' in Holy Quran.
iii. Truthfulness and Prophet's Pattern:
This quality was perfectly found in Allah's messenger's personality and even infidels of Makkah called him as 'sadiq' and 'Ameen before Prophethood.
When he first preached at mount.safa, the disbelievers attested him as truthful.
In the court of Rome's king, Abu sufyian confessed, "Hazrat Muhammad has never told a lie". We know this from Prophet's life that truth is such power which gives. him a good place in society. We should adopt truth in our personal life to maintain our respect in our society,
